Today we as a country fly this flag, our flag.
It could have been any of these throughout all or part of our country.
I thank the service men and women and their families that gave the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that we can fly our flag.
We, as a country have also served so that other countries and people can attempt to live a life under their flag and without fear. Some of these conflicts have not been very popular with American citizens that have judged the conflict from the safety of their own house, and also with the men and women on the field. No matter what the people at home say or what they felt they have still laid their lives on the line, not only as of their commitment to follow orders, but to protect their fellow serviceman on the field, in the air or at sea.
I don't know the exact numbers but I can tell you there are more posthumous Medals of Honor awarded than there are to those who are still alive, and I'd bet that would apply to Silver and Bronze Stars. Those that are still alive usually ended up with a Purple Heart as well. There are also many men and women who have died in conflict that have received no award, but paid the same price. I have the utmost respect for all of them and their families.
Today lets put politics aside. Let us honor those who gave the most to give us the best. Let us honor those who gave the most so the man or woman next to them could get one day closer to going home after fighting for a people that may never walk on our soil and so those people may also have a better tomorrow.
Let us also honor their families, who have had to pick up and move along as best as they know how. They have sacrificed as well. The mom who has to pick up a second job, the teenage son who suddenly becomes the man of the family, the baby that never met their mom or dad. Let's not forget them as well.
Today let us put all the crap aside, let us forget our views and opinions. Let us just remember the people.
